At this gig,14-year old Bernadette Whelan is crushed by the crowd of teen idol David Cassidy. She would die four days later. Cassidy is so shaken by the incident, he wouldn't tour again for 11 years.

Nearly all bands who play venues like that venue have a soundcheck on the day 4pm / 5pm but Peter
said Bruce was Hammersmith Odeon on the day before the show on the 17th rehearsing and sound-checking.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL has been recuperating in London after being treated for coronavirus in April, but even with her wealth the singer-songwriter is unlikely to be able to afford to return to where she lived at 29 Lennox Gardens in Knightsbridge for several years from 1967. An apartment that forms the majority part of that Grade II listed building is now for sale for the staggering sum of £24.75 million ($30 million, €27.7 million or درهم110 million).
The pictures of the flat now look incredible and despite it being a three bed flat , the space is over 5000
square feet , so three times the average house size as the flats around there are enormous.
A nice quote from Marianne Faithful at the end of this....
Marianne Faithfull lived lived there with her then husband John Dunbar and their son, Nicholas, but left to live with Mick Jagger. At the time, she told ‘New Musical Express’: “My first move was to get a Rolling Stone as a boyfriend, I slept with three and decided the lead singer was best.”
Sunday afternoon i was told The Ramblin' Man Festival will today confirm this years event is cancelled.
Sat 18 July---Lynyrd Skynyrd were due to headline the Saturday night....Monday update...CANCELLED.
18 May 1980

Sunday 17 May 2020.
The last time i went two months without going to see a band live was early 1974.
24 Dec 1973 Elton John then next was 23 Feb 1974 The Carpenters...both at Hammersmith Odeon.
Thankfully many bands are putting up great DVD live shows and "at home" clips on YouTube.
This is another fantastic show that is now up...
FOO FIGHTERS have shared footage of their massive 2008 gig at London’s Wembley Stadium in full.
The gig, in support of their ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ album from the previous year, featured guest appearances by Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin during the encore.
They played two shows at Wembley Stadium on that tour...
Fri 06 June 2008 - I went to this show
Sat 07 June 2008 - this is the show that is on the DVD.
On that day i was at The Sex Pistols Experience Jubilee tribute gig on a boat on The River Thames.

On this day 45 years ago - 17 May 1975

Saturday 16 May 2020.
This superb concert film by PRINCE from 1985 is now up on YouTube.
The companion live album to Prince‘s 1985 concert film Prince and the Revolution: Live has finally been released on major streaming platforms.
Prince and his backing band were captured on film performing on March 30, 1985 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York during the ‘Purple Rain’ tour. The film marked the first time that Prince had officially released live concert footage as both a television broadcast and home video, while a subsequent DVD release followed in 2017.
You can see Prince has been watching some Little Richard/James Brown/ Jimi Hendrix videos.
I still have the VHS copy i made of this as it was shown as an OGWT tv special back then.
The following year in 1986 I saw two of his three shows at Wembley Arena on his European Tour.
This was his first major UK tour , his only previous UK show was at The Lyceum in 1981.
I saw Prince loads of times in big venues and small venues , he was always top notch in concert.
Sad news that PHIL MAY from sixties band The Pretty Things has passed away.
The Pretty Things vocalist Phil May has died, aged 75. Phil May, lead singer of The Pretty Things, has died. His death, at 75, was confirmed in a family statement. "Phil May passed away at 7.05am on Friday 15 May at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Kings Lynn, Norfolk," the statement reads.
Reports say he crashed his bike , and was taken to hospital where complications set in and he died.
The Pretty Things were widely regarded as one of the great UK R&B groups of the early 60s, with their off-stage antics outstipping their friends and rivals the Rolling Stones.
Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant even considered them “unmanageable” – although they still went on to sign for Zeppelin’s Swan Song label. May was also something of a revolutionary figure, with David Bowie once scribbling the word, ‘God!’ beside his name in an old address book.
I saw The Pretty Things supporting Uriah Heep at Wembley Arena in 1976.
The Sex Pistols supported The Pretty Things in July 1976.
16 May 2010 - It was 10 years ago today that rock singer RONNIE JAMES DIO sadly passed away.
I saw him perform over a dozen times with various bands starting with Elf in 1974.
It was 46 years ago today that i saw the first of all three SLADE shows at Hammersmith Odeon.

This day 44 years ago i saw KISS play their debut London shows, which were fantastic.
They still remain my favourite live American band to this day.
They had played Manchester and Birmingham in the days before.
The tickets at Hammersmith cost £2.50 , £2 and £1.50
KISS,Stray Hammersmith Odeon, London 15.05.1976 tonight I was 8th row from the front.
At the first show I got Peter Criss drum stick.
KISS,Stray Hammersmith Odeon, London 16.05.1976 tonight I had front row centre seats.
After the second show I sprayed KISS on a pair of double doors on the right side in 5 ft letters.
This would remind me of KISS each time I went to the venue.
The venue painted over the doors in January 1977.

IGGY POP'S legendary 2016 show at the Royal Albert Hall in London is set to be replayed in full online tonight (May 13) to mark the fourth anniversary of the gig.
The show came as Iggy toured his ‘Post Pop Depression’ album and saw him performing with the same star-studded live band — including Queens of the Stone Age‘s Josh Homme and Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders — he assembled for the LP.
The May 13, 2016 gig can be relived all over again as it will be streamed in full on YouTube at 8PM UK time.
I was at this excellent gig that NME called " one of the best shows of 2016".
Happy Birthday to STEVIE WONDER who is 70 today.

CONTAGION - This film was released several years ago in 2011, before the current situation.
Contagion is a 2011 American thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Its ensemble cast includes Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, and Sanaa Lathan. The plot concerns the spread of a virus transmitted by respiratory droplets and fomites, attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order in a pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to halt its spread. To follow several interacting plot lines, the film makes use of the multi-narrative "hyperlink cinema" style, popularized in several of Soderbergh's films.

GUNS N ROSES have finally confirmed their European Tour for May / June is not happening.
Guns N' Roses become the latest act to cancel a major tour as COVID-19 continues to take a toll.
I would think that as the tour features outdoor shows , the new dates will be in the summer of next year.

Sad news that American singer BETTY WRIGHT has passed away.
The soul, funk and R&B singer Betty Wright, celebrated across pop genres for her remarkable vocal prowess,
has died aged 66.
The cause of death was not immediately known but Wright’s niece confirmed the news, writing on Twitter: “Sleep in peace aunty Betty Wright. Fly high angel.”
Wright was best known for the song Clean Up Woman, a frank tale of a woman who “cleans up” with men other women have neglected, recorded when she was 17. It reached No6 in the US charts in 1971 and its funk guitar lick has been sampled frequently, including by Mary J Blige and Chance the Rapper.
Other Wright tracks have been sampled by Beyoncé, for her hit single Upgrade U, rappers 2Pac, YG and Slim Thug and more.
Wright had two UK Top 40 hits, with the up-tempo numbers Shoorah Shoorah and Where is the Love, both in 1975. The latter track won Wright her only Grammy award from six nominations, for best R&B song.
I saw her headline Hammersmith Odeon in 1989 and 1992.
The full show from 1992 is up on YouTube.
The opening shows you the iconic Hammersmith Odeon outside signage.

Sad news that music legend LITTLE RICHARD has died aged 87.
The rock and roll veteran passed away and his death was revealed by his son Danny Penniman
who confirmed the news to Rolling Stone.
No more details about his passing are currently known.
Little Richard is credited with changing the face of music after shooting to fame in the 1950s with his hit Tutti Frutti.
His trademark screams, outrageous dance moves and stage costumes set him apart from others of the era and made him a household name.
He turned to religion so never played many shows in the UK in the past 40 years.
His final London show was 03 May 2005 at The Royal Festival Hall but that clashed
with the four Cream shows i went to at The Royal Albert Hall.

BBC4 tv repeated the documentary "Definitely Dusty" last night, which can be seen now on BBC iPlayer.
Not many people say they saw Dusty Springfield perform a full show live, but i did.
Dusty was on tv often in the 1970s and 1980s , but did not play live that often.
Dusty Springfield,John Miles Royal Albert Hall , London 03.12.1979
Some footage from this concert is used in the documentary.
After that show, Dusty had to write a written apology to the Queen after telling an audience which included Princess Margaret: ‘It’s nice to see the royalty isn’t confined to the box’ – a reference to the ‘queens’ among her fans.

LIVE NATION are the biggest promoter of live music events around the world.
It’s been a difficult couple of months for Live Nation Entertainment, which stands as one of the most exposed companies on the planet to the economic impact of COVID-19 lockdown.
However, in brighter news for shareholders, Live Nation CEO and President Michael Rapino noted that over 90% of fans have opted to keep their tickets for postponed shows, rather than take refunds.
Live Nation, alongside others in the the live industry, announced that it was suspending all upcoming concerts.

Visually mega production with massive stage sets and hundreds of dancers etc.
A few acts refused to get involved including The Sex Pistols but there is a great segment where
"Pretty Vacant" is played and a load of costumed dancers on pogo sticks bounce around the stadium.
This was the event where The Who's manager Bill Curbishley was emailed from the organisers asking
"as it was a special occasion could he get Keith Moon to join up and play with Roger and Pete?".
They seemed to have forgotten that he had died 34 years previously.
Acts that performed included Paul McCartney, Madness, Emeli Sande, George Michael,
Kaiser Chiefs, Ray Davies, David Bowie video tribute, fashion show with supermodels,
Beady Eye (Liam G) performing "Wonderwall", Eric Idle performing "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life",
Muse, Queen with Jessie J on vocals and Freddie on the big screen, Annie Lennox,

Sad news that Jamaican singer MILLIE SMALL has died this week in London at the age of 73.
She had suffered a stroke, according to her friend and former producer Chris Blackwell.
Millie was most famous for her hit single My Boy Lollipop, which was Jamaica's first million-selling single.
She was hailed for bringing the sound of ska to the UK and for having one of the top three greatest all-time hit singles of 1964, falling just behind the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Her big hit also featured a little-known Rod Stewart playing the harmonica in the backing track - something Millie said showed how big a star he was going to become....Rod Stewart denies that he played on that record...
Happy Birthday to BOB SEGER who is 75 today.

Sad news that The Stranglers keyboard player DAVE GREENFIELD has died of coronavirus aged 71.
Greenfield died on 3 May 2020, after a prolonged stay in hospital for heart problems, during which he tested positive for COVID-19.
Greenfield was known for his distinctive sound on his trademark Hammond electric organ, most notably on the band’s classic hit ‘Golden Brown’, which he wrote.

The final gig was announced as The Good, The Bad & The Queen on 31 March 2007
then a few days later The Fall announced a show for 01 April 2007 but the last actual show
was 03 May 2007 which was Groove Armada...I went to that show.
My first show there was Wizzard in 1973 and Bill Haley in 1974 and over 50 others since.
I spent most of my time nearby at Hammersmith Odeon.
The disco nights at the weekend.

10 years ago today i saw IGGY POP & THE STOOGES play Hammersmith Apollo.
Slade at the BBC was on BBC4 tv again last night.
Watching Slade on TOTP in the early 1970s was just fantastic...they had six number one hits...
It is up on BBC iPlayer to watch for 30 days.
I have seen SLADE over a dozen times since 1974 when i saw them play three great shows at
Hammersmith Odeon in their glam rock heyday.
16/17/18 May 1974
Slade were huge at this stage "Merry Christmas Everybody " was a massive No 1 recently and the
current hit single is " Everyday".

Saturday 02 May 2020.
It was 15 years ago this week in 2005.
Eric Clapton joined former CREAM members, drummer Ginger Baker and bass player Jack Bruce for the first of four nights at London's Royal Albert Hall, 36 years after the band had split up....I went to all four shows.
Three years ago i went to the launch of an exhibition regards the legendary first punk venue The Roxy.
Here is a nice 15 minutes video of the plaque unveiling and drinks afterparty (cannot see myself in it).
It was great to see so many punk rock chums at this event.
None of the A-List punk band members from Sex Pistols or Clash turned up but a few lesser knowns here.
I went to Roxy Club a few times in early 1977, which included The Damned and Johnny Thunders.
The venue is now a Speedo store.

Here is my review of the day....
Tuesday 25 April 2017.
THE ROXY - blue plaque unveiling and gallery private view - Neal Street,London WC2....2.30pm to 6.30pm...
The Legendary 'Roxy' punk club that was in Covent Garden gets some deserved recognition.
It was London's first club dedicated to punk.
The Sex Pistols never played there but The Clash,The Buzzcocks ,The Damned and many others did.
On Tuesday 25 April at 3pm, the ROXY plaque will be unveiled at 41-43 Neal Street by a series of special guests, which will then be followed, on Wednesday 26 April, by a two-week free exhibition open to the public at 35-37 Neal Street.
The ‘Fear and Loathing at the ROXY’ exhibition, curated by artist and historian Jane Palm-Gold, will showcase iconic moments of the ROXY club through a series of photographs and historic club posters from Derek Ridgers, Jeremy Gibbs, Rebecca Hale and more.
Exhibition runs daily from Wednesday 26th April - Wednesday 10th May - 11am - 7pm - Free entry
I went to five gigs at The Roxy Club in early was only open for a couple of years.
The main period was the first four months of 1977 when Andrew and Susan were running it.
The venue changed hands when they could not work with the then landlord.
The creatives of the ROXY, including Andrew Czezowski and his partner Susan Carrington, have recently launched the world’s first duography book earlier this year based on their personal experiences and memories of the infamous club including over 100 rare and previously unseen personal archive photos, flyers, artwork, media clippings and quotes.

Today the site is the flagship store for the swimwear brand Speedo.
I arrive in Neal Street at 2.30pm.
It is a bit different to 40 years ago as there are trendy stores and tourists everywhere.
Gradually folks arrive and there must over 200 in the street by the unveiling time of 3pm.
Great to see so many old punk rock mates and punk band members here.
At 3pm Andy and Susan who ran the club in early 1977 make speeches and an old guy who
i presume was from The Seven Dials Trust or Heritage Trust makes speeches and the unveiling
happens to big cheers from the crowd below.
We had a punk poetry reading of 'An Ode to The Roxy Club'.
Then 3.30pm to 6.30pm is the drinks reception and private view at the gallery nearby.
It is over two floors with repro posters and flyers (originals are worth many £££).
I particularly liked the gig list of all the gigs that happened there.
Folks here included Jordan,Peter Perret (The Only Ones),Pauline Murray (Penetration),
Jock McDonald (The Bollock Brothers),Gaye Advert (The Adverts),Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants),
Alan Edwards who was pr for many of the punk bands including The Stranglers back in the day and
is now one of the main music pr in London by looking after David Bowie and many more.
Tessa Pollitt(The Slits),Andy Blade (Eater) and other members of Eater,
Eugene Butcher (Vive Le Rock mag) - check his Facebook for videos and comments,
Photographer Ray Stevenson who took many iconic punk photos in the 1970s,
Members of The Rejects,Richard England (Cadiz Music),Tony Holton,
Shanne Bradley from The Nipple Erectors,
Steve Diggle (The Buzzcocks) turned up late after 5pm.
Great dj punk dj sounds from Jeffrey Munday in the basement.
Complimentary wines and beers for all guests...a totally great event...

Legendary Afrobeat drummer TONY ALLEN has died aged 79.
He played with many bands over his long career, including as part of supergroup The Good, the Bad & the Queen with Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon and Simon Tong. He released two albums with the group – a self-titled record in 2007 and ‘Merrie Land’ in 2018.
I saw him play with them a couple of times.

Thursday 30 April 2020.
I read another two music books this week.
SYLVAIN SYLVAIN - There's No Bones In Ice Cream
First published in 2018
I went to the launch party for this book with Glen Matlock and got my copy signed by Sylvain.
Sylvain is one of the two members of The New York Dolls who is still alive.
As you would imagine the story of The New Yorks is very chaotic.
Some great stories of New York in the early 1970s.
How he met Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood while making his own clothes.
The ups and many downs of The Dolls as they got signed to Mercury Records.
Stories of playing London, Paris and other European cities.
How Malcolm McLaren helped the band after Mercury dropped them after two albums.
They split up in the mid 1970s and did not reform until nearly 30 years later in 2004.
Only a couple of pages at the end on their reunion period from 2004 onwards.
I was a bit too young to catch New York Dolls in the early 1970s but when I went to New York in 1979
i made sure we booked into The Diplomat Hotel as The New York Dolls and KISS played in their first floor ballroom.
When i was there I saw The Buzzcocks in the same ballroom.
I saw solo shows by Sylvain Sylvain , Johnny Thunders and David Johansen many times and I saw
The New York Dolls several times when they reformed from 2004 to 2011.
WEIRD & GILLY - Mick Ronson : The Spider With The Platinum Hair
First published in 2003
This book came out after his sad death so it is not Mick's words but friends and family, including
Maggi Ronson, Tony Visconti, Glen Matlock, Joe Elliot, Mick Jones, Chrissie Hynde and many others.
Mick grew up in Hull and played in bands there but his talent eventually got him noticed around London.
He joined up with Bowie in early 1970s and in 1972 played on ' Ziggy Stardust ' and Lou Reeds 'Transformer'.
Splitting up with Bowie, he then formed a band with Mott The Hoople's Ian Hunter.
I saw Hunter-Ronson live in 1975 , 1979, 1989, 1990.
He produced many bands including The Rich Kids, Slaughter & The Dogs, David Johansen,
Morrissey and others.
He sadly died at the very young age of 46...see below.

Wednesday 29 April 2020.
This day in 1963...
19 year old (yes just 19 )ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM signs a contract with The Rolling Stones, becoming their manager. Oldham had seen the band in concert the previous day at the Crawdaddy Club in London.
When Jagger and Richards were arrested for drug possession in 1967, instead of devising a strategy for their legal defence and public relations, Oldham fled to the United States.Oldham was forced to resign as manager of the Rolling Stones in late 1967 and sold his rights to the group's music to Allen Klein the following year.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Oldham worked primarily in the United States. He produced Donovan, Gene Pitney and other artists. In the mid-1980s, he made Colombia his home after marrying Esther Farfan, a Colombian model. There he briefly worked with some Colombian bands....he still lives in Colombia today...
This day in 1993...
MICK RONSON, guitarist for David Bowie's band Ziggy Stardust's Spiders From Mars, died of liver cancer at the age of 46.

Queen | Earls Court 1977 | Full Concert
A couple of days before this show i bumped into Sid Vicious at a Ramones show at The Roundhouse.
I asked him if The Sex Pistols had any gigs lined up...he said "we are playing a secret gig on a boat".
This of course turned out to be their legendary Silver Jubilee Gig on The River Thames on 07 June 1977.
We went down there not knowing what time it was departing or that it was guest list only.
It ended being a planned 6pm departure so we arrived a bit late and just missed trying for it.
I am in a couple of pictures in Sex Pistols books that featured the event.
Anyway , we had a good back up as we popped over to see Queen at Earls Court Arena, London.
Just bunked in the side doors and saw a great gig for free.
I saw Queen a dozen times with Freddie Mercury including their legendary Live Aid set in 1985.

Monday 27 April 2020.
Happy Birthday to ex KISS guitarist ACE FREHLEY who is 69 today.
I saw both debut London KISS shows with Ace at Hammersmith Odeon in May 1976.

Jodie Comer ... Villanelle

This day in 1976 i saw AC/DC play their only their third ever show in Europe.
