January 04, 2005

Well 2004 was another amazing year for great live concerts so as everyone else is doing best of 2004 reviews here is another one .I went to a staggering 207 shows in 2004 and my grand gig total since 1973 has gone over 4200 .This year i attended 5 music award events .NME Awards ,BRIT Awards ,MOJO Awards , MOBO Awards , Q Awards . I went to the following music festivals Download , V2004 Chelmsford and Reading Festival. Sadly only one overseas show that was Social Distortion in Orlando ,Florida Jan 2004... Lets start off with shows that were real events mainly because some bands had not played together for a good few years .New York Dolls played their first shows anywhere for over 25 years at The Royal Festival Hall .Duran Duran did their first UK your with all 5 original members for over 15 years. Iggy Pop And The Stooges played their first UK dates together for over 20 years. Motorhead played The Royal Opera House .Morrissey had his amazing comeback .Siouxsie played the 100 Club for first time in over 20 years. Simon And Garfunkel played the UK for the first time in over 10 years. Rush played their first UK tour for over 10 years . The Stray Cats reformed for their first UK tour together for over 10 years.Metallica played that incredible show at Download Festival where their drummer Lars went AWOL and with a couple of hours notice got replacement drummers and played a blinder .Mick Jones of The Clash got back on stage for the first time in years with his own band Carbon Silicon. The best 20 live shows of 2004 as seen by me were .... As you can see the best shows were always worth seeing more than once ... 1.Madonna - Earls Court Arena and Wembley Arena - August 2004(i was at 4 shows).... 2.Duran Duran - Wembley Arena - April 2004 ( i was at 4 shows).... 3.Brian Wilson - Royal Festival Hall - Feb and June 2004 ( i was at 7 yes 7 shows)... 4.The Who - The Forum and Royal Albert Hall - March 2004 + Birmingham June 2004 (3 shows) 5.New York Dolls - Royal Festival Hall - June 16 and 18 ( i was at both and Reading Fest) 6.Linkin Park + Iggy Pop And The Stooges - Download Festival - June 2004.... 7.Metallica with guest drummers - Download Festival - June 2004 ..... 8.Motorhead - Royal Opera House Feb 2004 and Hammersmith Apollo Nov 2004 .... 9.David Lee Roth - Hammersmith Apollo - Feb 2004 ... 10.Simon And Garfunkel - Hyde Park Outdoors - July 2004 ... 11.Rush - Wembley Arena - Sept 2004 (i was at 2 shows).... 12.Elton John And His Band - Hammersmith Apollo -Dec 2004 ... 13.Dead Men Walking - Mean Fiddler - Oct 2004 ... 14.Diana Ross - Wembley Arena - March 2004... 15.Kraftwerk - Brixton Acadamy - March 2004 ... 16.Whitesnake - Hammersmith Apollo - Oct 2004 ... 17.Sting - Royal Albert Hall - May 2004... 18.UFO - Astoria - June 2004 ... 19.Peter Gabriel - Wembley Arena - June 2004... 20.Lionel Richie - Wembley Arena - Oct 2004 ... Although i have seen great shows by most of this years hottest bands such as Franz Ferdinand , Scissor Sisters ,Razorlight ,Keane etc because they only have the one album out its hard to compete with some of the acts above who have had loads of classic material out over the years. Alas there were a few pretty boring headline acts that did not rock my boat so here are the 10 worst shows i saw this year in no special order Norah Jones, Evanescense, Incubus , Korn , Sum 41 , Chris De Burgh , Sarah McLachlan ,Rasmus , Beta Band ,Blink 182. The hottest tickets of the year where the touts made loads of money were 1.Tom Waits - Hammersmith Apollo - Nov 2004 ... 2.Velvet Revolver - Hammersmith Apollo - Sept 2004... Best aftershow party of 2004 would have to be those amazing New York Dolls shows in June at The Royal Festival Hall where all the punk rock old school inc Glen Matlock and Paul Cook from The Sex Pistols and Mick Jones from The Clash and many others turned up to say hello to them. Looking forward to 2005 and even January has some great acts playing live shows. Velvet Revolver play a full UK tour including 5 sold out London shows . Duran Duran play a one off show for the BBC at Hammersmith Palais. Green Day play a full UK tour and Julian Cope and Gang Of Four play shows . Feb sees German rockers Rammstein play shows , also The BRIT Awards and NME Awards . March sees a great classic rock double bill of Judas Priest and The Scorpions . Also huge arena tours by Kylie Minogue and Rod Stewart and even Motley Crue are putting the fact that a couple of members hate the sight of each other and are reuniting for a world tour with some UK dates in June . In the summer the big guns of REM ,Oasis and U2 will play huge outdoor stadium shows. Also lets not forget those who have passed away this year John Peel ,Johnny Ramone ,Ray Charles , Arthur Kane , Dimebag from Pantera /Damageplan , Rick James and others .
