November 18, 2009

17 Nov 2009.Another day with three events.First was 2.30pm to 4pm.Bad Company Press Conference at The Hard Rock Cafe,London.About 70 people here with a mix of comp winners and press.Free beers and HRC food flowing. This was to announce Bad Companys first UK tour for over 25 years although i was actually told this 10 days ago at the Paul Rodgers gig.Eight arena shows ending on Sunday 11 April 2010 at Wembley Arena.Support act is Joe(Aerosmith)Perry Project so will be a must see classic rock package. For tickets and info see www.livenation.co.uk and also www.planetrock.com.Rock dj Nicky Horne introduced Paul Rodgers,Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke who played a fantastic four song set that was superb."Feel Like Making Love","Shooting Star","Seagull" and they came back for "Do Right By Your Woman".They gave a Q n A and then posed for photographs and did signatures and gave out guitar pics. Also the press got a nice 8 track special edition live dvd from recent American tour.Excellent event....then 5pm to 7.30pm was at South Molton Street Christmas Lights Switch On.X Factors Diana Vickers does the honours as most of the shops stay open late with drinks and special offers. After event champers and canopes in the very nice members club Molton House,43 South Molton Street,W1......then over to see Arctic Monkeys live at Wembley Arena,London. The first of two shows at Wembley Arena for The Arctics who are promoting third album "Humbug". This week their debut album was named by NME as 4th best in Top 50 albums in the last ten years. They are on for 85 mins. There are plenty of lights and some screens too.I still think they are more suited to a Brixton/Hammersmith stage than this big place.Set inc "Brainstorm","I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor","My Propeller", "Crying Lightning","The View From The Afternoon" and "When The Sun Goes Down " and some ticker tape covered the floor.Encores inc "Fluorescent Adolescent".The crowd loved it but i would call it a good show rather than a great one........... 16 Nov 2009.Beyonce + Julian Perretta live at The 02 Arena,London. The last of three shows at The 02 Arena.(Her Sunday show was for Trident Chewing Gum comp winners only).Up first we have the curly haired Julian Perretta who was on for about 30 mins.He played "Wonder Why" which i think was a hit single and a cover of The Killers "Human".Beyonce due on stage at 9pm but does not arrive until 9.30pm and its a 2 hours 10 mins show which means a 11.40pm finish. This is taking the piss big time. The 02 Arena is a tricky venue to get to at the best of times but 20,000 people leaving at 11.40pm ON A MONDAY NIGHT IS NOT ON.Beyonce is an incredible performer.Totally confident at singing and dancing and looking stunning all at the same time.Same show as the one i saw here 6 months ago as its still part of her "I Am Sasha Fierce" world tour with 10 piece all female band along with dancers and massive screens. She opens big with "Crazy In Love" and "Naughty Girl" then its a bunch of watery ballads inc a dodgy version of "Ave Maria" in a white wedding dress??."If I Were A Boy" and a cover of "You Oughta Know" were good.About 10 costume changes so visually its a great show to watch. After an hour she is up on wires to the second stage for 30 mins which includes a brilliant "Irreplaceable" and a Destinys Child medley. The finale of "Single Ladies" was great and during encore "Halo" she stagedived into the crowd before she gave a tribute to Michael Jackson.Very enjoyable show but really would have been better with 30 mins of the weaker material taken out................. 15 Nov 2009.Went to three events today.First was 1pm to 3.30pm.Olympia Music Fair.A great place to find rarities and bootlegs.I got a few things there inc Mott The Hoople Live At Hammersmith 2009.This was 20 quid at the gig but only 10 quid here.Led Zeps Jimmy Page is here with his photographer mate Ross Halfin but its strictly no signatures or photos today.Chatting to dealer mates.Jimmy buys a few Zep bootlegs. He also buys Sex Pistols 12 inch "The Biggest Blow" which features Ronnie Biggs.Jimmy stayed for ages. ......then 3.30pm to 6pm next door in the same building for Masterchef 2009 at Olympia.A decent event where there are food and drinks tastings and samples for all and huge mass cooking classes. Some chefs from the tv are here.I buy a dirt cheap copy of Ainsley Harriotts book "Just Five Ingredients".Not very rock n roll i know but a mans gotta eat right??......then off to see Kasabian + Reverend And The Makers live at Wenbley Arena,London. The support play a decent set but seem a bit lost in this huge venue. Kasabian's second of two sell out shows at this venue to promote recent third album success of "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" which won Q Best Album of 2009 Award and was shortlisted for The Mercury Album Prize.I have seen them a few times but this is where they go from playing gigs to putting on shows. The 1 hour 45 mins mins is easily the best i have seen them play. The stage set is based on the album with roadies in long white coats and the band playing within a huge "asylum" with props and gimmicks and stuff.Their Oasis type fans are totally up for it.The floor is a mess of bouncing bodies and beer.Set inc "Underdog","Where Did All The Love Go?","Shoot The Runner","Cutt Off","Processed Beats","Empire","Ladies And Gentlemen"(Roll The Dice) which was dedicated to all the old boys in the crowd. There were 3 or 4 slower songs that plodded a bit but at least it gave the crowd a breather.Mega versions of "Fire" and "Club Foot" got the crowd bouncing again.Encores had comedian Noel Fielding come on as his character Vlad The Impaler for the single of same name whacking severed heads into the crowd and dancing madly. Then it was "Stuntman" and then Noel came back on for a brilliant "L.S.F.(Lost Souls Forever).Kasabiam were on top form......... 14 Nov 2009.Deep Purple + The Crave live at Hammersmith Apollo,London. The second of two shows here for DP.Up first we have a decent bunch of young rockers called The Crave. They are hotly tipped by Classic Rock mag and have some good songs. They play a UK club tour in Dec.See www.myspace.com/thecraveband....Deep Purple are on for 1 hour 40 mins. Its one of those shows where the first part is good, the middle bit plods a bit and the finish is good.Opening with "Highway Star" and a bit later "Strange Kind Of Woman" and "Fireball".Steve Morse guitar playing is fantastic all night but Ian Gillan seems to be straining vocally. We have a guitar solo, keyboard solo and bass solo along with some average songs. Then near the end we get "Space Truckin" and a mega "Smoke On The Water" along with encores "Hush" and "Black Night".So a good show rather than great show overall tonight. See aftershow page for this show................. 13 Nov 2009.Went to a party then a gig tonight. 6.15pm to 7.45pm i attended the 15th birthday of Eurostar at St Pancras Eurostar Terminal,London. Its at the Searcy Champagne bar which is next to the Eurostar trains and is two carriages long. No celebs here just competition winners. The free champers and canopes are flowing and four opera singers entertain the crowd.A great raffle where 15 of the comp winners names were pulled out of the hat and won a pair of Eurostar return tickets with accomodation in Paris....then a dash to see Muse at The 02 Arena,London. Its their second of two shows here as part of a UK tour that sold out in minutes.I have a superb seat to the right of stage. They are still promoting album " The Resistance".On stage for 1 hour 45 mins. The stage production as always with Muse is stunning.Tonight the band are on three huge skyscraper towers that go up and down. Opening with "Uprising" and for third song in "New Born" there are a hundred green lasers. Loads of gems inc "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Hysteria" and a great drum solo with a revolving kit. Also "Cave","Guiding Light" and "United Stares Of Eurasia".Muse at full throttle are one of the best live rock bands out there. "Plug In Baby" and "Time Is Running Out" were both mega.Four song encore finished with a brilliant "Knights Of Cydonia".Great gig......... 12 Nov 2009. "Children In Need" event live at The Royal Albert Hall,London featuring Paul McCartney + Take That + Robbie Williams + Muse + Shirley Bassey + Dizzee Rascal + Lily Allen + Snow Patrol + Leona Lewis plus others. The floor is standing so its set for a great atmosphere. Two sets of 90 mins and 70 mins with each act on for 1 to 4 songs each.I am in the circle. The view is ok but the sound as usual up here is a bit muffled.Up first are Muse who play two songs but this Take That crowd are not that interested.Muse had their own gig later at The 02 Arena. They finished here at 8pm and were on stage at The 02 Arena at 9.15pm my spies tell me. Take That came on for "Greatest Day" which was very good then Robbie Williams sang a couple of new ones "Bodies" and "You Know Me".Both average. Leona Lewis did a couple. She is in a stunning dress. All the females had impressive outfits on as it will be on tv.Then Paulo Nutini sang a couple then Katherine Jenkins sang one.Cheryl Cole did her single.Mika sung one.Annie Lennox sang a great version of "Why".Shirley Bassey sung a song with Gary Barlow then with Dizzee Rascal "Diamonds Are Forever".Second half started with a couple by Snow Patrol inc "Chasing Cars".Then Dizzee Rascal did a cover of "Dirty Cash".Then Lily Allen sung a great "The Fear" and then for "Shine" was joined with Take That. Then Take That sung a really good "Rule The World".Then Paul McCartney on at 10.25pm for a great 3 song 25 mins set."Back In The USSR","Get Back" and an extended "Hey Jude" where he was joined by all the other artists.A very enjoyable night out with lots of big names. BBC TV will show highlights next Thursday........ 11 Nov 2009.6.45pm to 9.15pm.Launch party for Michael Winners book "Winners Dinners" at The Belvedere Restaurant,Holland Park,London W8. Always nice when you can walk to a quality venue.About 100 people here for Michael Winners new book.He was a director of over 30 films in the 1960s and 1970s and is now a food critic for The Sunday Times. His book features over 600 places to eat or not to eat.Very honest.A bit like the Simon Cowell of food critics.A superb bunch of his showbiz mates are here to hand out awards to his fave eating places.Musicians Nick Mason(Pink Floyd) and Chris Rea.Others inc Sir Michael Caine and his wife,Joanna Lumley,Anne Robinson,Nigel Havers,Lionel Blair,Tom Conti and Stephen Berkoff.Loads of freebie champers flowing and lots of yummy grub.A lovely venue and it was hard to be dragged away at the finish. Michael Winner was still here at the end with us. Dating back to 17th Century, The Belvedere was once the Summer Ballroom to the Jacobean mansion that was Holland House. It stands, not only in the middle of one of London's most beautiful parks, Holland Park, but in one of the capital's most fashionable areas.See their website for info www.belvedererestaurant.co.uk............... 10 Nov 2009.A night away from live music as this coming weekend will be full of great shows.Went to three events tonight.First was 7pm to 7.45pm was the Eleni Gagoushi-Legion Of Angels art preview at The Sanctum Soho Hotel,Warwick Street,W1.Had a couple of freebie cocktails here. Why does art always seem so expensive??.Nice surprise to Nicko McBrain(Iron Maiden drummer) and Neil Murray(ex Whitesnake and others)and Rusty Egan (dj and ex Rich Kids/Visage) here but its more likely they know the owner Mark Fuller rather than their love of art......then 8pm to 10pm on to the very nice Aqua,5th Floor,240 Regent Street,W1 for The Elle Decoration-British Design Awards. Its only been open a month.A huge contempory space with Spanish food on one side and Japanese on the other with bars in the middle and a stunning rooftop terrace looking down Regent Street. It really has the wow factor. We had some freebie drinks and nice canopes but must get back here for a proper meal.Erin OConnor presented Sir Terence Conran with the Outstanding Contribution To Design Award.Zandra Rhodes was here.Nice goodie bag for all too...... then 10.30pm to 11.30pm trekked into the city for launch of Mahikis sister bar Kanaloa at Shoe Lane,St Pauls,London EC4.Loads of photographers outside the venue.Full of yuppies and bankers and very loud and very crowded and six deep at the bar.It was horrible.Showing my age no doubt as everyone else is having a wild time.Great location as right next to Goldman Sachs etc. I was here an hour but that was 59 mins too long.Should have stayed at Aqua.................. 09 Nov 2009.7.15pm to 12.30am.Miss World Charity Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel,Park Lane,London. In the 1970s it was massive but these days its a bit un pc to attend beauty events.Tonight was mainly to promote the main contest which is in South Afica on 12 Dec 2009 and to raise a six figure sum for Variety Childrens Charity.About 700 people here inc tv legend Bruce Forsyth and his wife. She is an ex Miss World.First of all its a champers reception for an hour then a nice 3 course dinner with wines and coffee.Over 100 stunning finalists are here in their evening gowns. They mingle at the tables and chat and pose for photos for all. After the auction we have some entertainment.Jonathan Ansell(ex G4)sings three songs then the West End cast of musical "Grease" give a very good 30 mins highlights of that show. The lead male is Ray Quinn.Overall it was a very nice evening ............ 08 Nov 2009.Saxon + Anvil live at Koko,Camden, London.A nice double bill of rock tonight.Great to see Anvil live again after the success of their dvd.I saw them way back in 1983 as support to Motorhead at Hammersmith Odeon before they took up some crap jobs(see the dvd). The singer has a friendly grin and you feel he is more a fan than a musician. On stage for 45 mins with songs inc "666","School Love","Winged Assassins", "This Is 13", a guitar solo with a vibrator, then "White Rhino" and their anthem "Metal On Metal".A good set.....Saxon are celebrating 30 years.I have seen them some 20 times inc way back in 1979 when they were also a support to Motorhead at Hammersmith Odeon. They are always good but tonight was a dream setlist for me.Lots of flashing lights and nice n loud. The 1 hour 50 mins set inc "Heavy Metal Thunder", "Dallas 1pm","Broken Heroes" for the troops who have fallen. All the band are wearing their poppies."Motorcycle Man","Power And The Glory","Solid Ball Of Rock","Back On The Streets Again","And The Bands Played On","Ride Like The Wind","Wheels Of Steel" and encores "Live To Rock","Denim And Leather","747-Strangers In The Night","Crusader" and "Princess Of The Night". I really do have a soft spot for Saxon. They get bashed by the critics but always deliver live.... 06 Nov 2009.Paul Rodgers live at The Hammersmith Apollo,London. One off UK show by this British rock legend (Free/Bad Company) on the back of winning the "Songwriter" award at The Classic Rock Awards earlier in the week. Its also his first London show since ending his stint with Queen. On stage for 90 mins Paul looks and sounds better than ever.Nice big smile and looking very healthy. That blues rock voice is perfect.Set inc "Walk In My Shadow","The Stealer", a song from his album and period with Queen called "Voodoo".Also "Run With The Pack" and "Wishing Well".For "Be My Friend" he was joined by Deborah Bonham. His excellent band inc Simon Kirke on drums and Howard Leese(Heart) on guitar and a bass player who has clearly been watching Geezer Butler. Also good was "Rock n Roll Fantasy","Shooting Star" and a superb version of "All Right Now".Encores were "Saving Grace", a stunning version of "Cant Get Enough Of Your Love" had Mick Ralphs join them on stage. Then a Hendrix tribute for "Little Wing/Sweet Angel" and finally "The Hunter".Really good show. See aftershow page for this gig.................. 05 Nov 2009.Bon Jovi live at The British Music Experience Soundstage at The 02 Complex,London. Bon Jovi in London for a few days to promote their new album "The Circle" and their batch of 02 Arena dates in June 2010.This was their second secret gig in London after the BBC Radio 2 one two days ago.The venue has been kept very hush hush.We get to Indigo at 7.30pm for a champagne reception in the upstairs bar.Bon Jovi songs in the background but just 50 people here and no sign of any fans or band or equipment. We are told by a Channel 4 guy that all the comp winners have to meet at Tower Hill for the boat to take them to the "secret gig location".Just after 8pm we are all escorted along to The British Music Experience Soundstage and some 350 fans are here and the band come on at 8.15pm. I have a great view a few feet from Richie Sambora for the 13 song 70 mins set.The sound is great and the band are really enjoying it.A nice mix of new album tracks and some classic hits and an opening Elvis Costello cover version.Set was "Pump It Up","We Weren't Born To Follow","Who Says You Cant Go Home","You Give Love A Bad Name","Work For The Working Man","Whole Lot Of Leaving",a semi acoustic "Living On A Prayer","When We Were Beautiful","Its My Life","Lost Highway","Superman Tonight","Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" and a stunning "Wanted Dead Or Alive" with Richies superb guitar solo.Needless to say to see them up close was fantastic....but it did not end there.Everyone was then escorted back to The Indigo where we watched a Bon Jovi DVD from 2008 tour called "When We Were Beautiful" which lasted 80 mins and was very good. The band did not turn up here but odd to see Gareth Gates in the VIP seats at the front. Then at midnight we got on the boat with the comp winners back to Tower Hill.Free beers and wines and BJ tunes in the background for the 45 mins trip.At Tower Hill we get on one of three buses going back to Kensington Close Hotel off Kensington High Street. Its a decent four star hotel i think.Around 100 comp winners from around the UK and Europe had won free travel and overnight accom here as part of the prize. What an amazing night for us and them................. 04 Nov 2009.Glen Matlock live at The Monto Water Rats,Kings Cross,London. This was part of Glens first full UK tour for ages. Its also 10 years since his first ever solo acoustic gig.The 70 mins set feat his usual mix of Sex Pistols and Rich Kids classics alongside a couple of Glens fave cover versions and some great solo material.Lots of singing along by a crowd who know most of the words to most of the songs.Setlist was "Somewhere Somehow","A Different World","Burning Sounds","Yeah Right","On Something","God Save The Queen","Mugs Game","Ambition","Ghosts Of Princes And Towers","Story Of Your Life","Steppin' Stone","Debris","Hard Work","Born Running",Pretty Vacant" and encore of "All Or Nothing".Glen always does a pukka set. Glastonbury Festival chappie Michael Eavis is here. The 2 hours 30 mins set by Green Day from start to finish is a lesson on how to put on an arena show.Lots of great songs, great lights, lots of audience on stage participation, non stop energy and very entertaining.Pretty much the same set as last weeks although the medley of classic covers was a bit different.See previous review for tracks played.A stunning show..... then over to The Garage,Highbury And Islington to see Foxboro Hot Tubs(Green Day) play a secret gig for comp winners and guests. They come on at 1am and play for 1 hour 45 mins. That means tonight they have played a total of 4 hours 15 mins.Eat your heart out Bruce Springsteen. There are no big Green Day hits as such.Lesser known tunes. One track "Stop Drop And Roll" was played a few times. Also a few cover versions.Guitar duties were taken up by Prima Donnas main man. The energy is mental and its a total beer fest as during every song the band open tins and spray the crowd and singer Billie is gulping down the stuff and is getting proper wasted along with jumping into the crowd every other song.Roadies giving out loads of free cans to those at front making it a proper party. Its great to see a big band really let their hair down. This setlist came from www.nme.com and they have a full review of it.Quite a night really. 'Stop, Drop And Roll' 'Mother Mary' 'Midnight Train' 'Ruby Room' 'Blood, Sex And Booze' 'Highway 1' 'She's A Saint, Not A Celebrity' 'Sally' 'Alligator' 'Supermodel Robots' 'The Pedestrian' '27th Avenue Shuffle' 'Dark Side Of Night' 'Pieces Of Truth' 'Stop, Drop And Roll' 'Stop, Drop And Roll' 'Stop, Drop And Roll' 'Stop, Drop And Roll' '27th Avenue Shuffle' 'My Generation' 'Johnny B Goode' 'Blitzkreig Bop' 'Red Tide' 'A Quick One, While Hes Away' 'Stop, Drop And Roll' ........ 31 Oct 2009.Fleetwood Mac live at Wembley Arena,London.Back again to see Fleetwood Mac.Same as yesterday i get in the front pit area looking up Lindsey Buckinghams nostrils much to the annoyance of folks in Block A who have their 75 quid view messed up.Its pretty much the same show. They are wearing the same clothes and the on stage chat is word for word the same as last night. The set is the same apart from that they dont play final song "Silver Springs" but still 2 hours 25 mins on stage.Lindsey Buckingham is pure quality all night.Really focused on the job and some amazing guitar playing.Poor Stevie Nicks bless her is more or less relegated to a backing singer position as her voice is pretty feeble. The three female backing singers hidden in the corner look bored shitless.Lots of great songs from their 1970s heyday.Lindsey and Stevie again had an emotional cuddle on stage.Mick Fleetwood still playing his eccentric English gentlemen role. It really does make the show better and more enjoyable the nearer to the stage you are....... 30 Oct 2009.Went to two live music events today. 4pm to 6pm was Beverley Knight + London Community Gospel Choir live at The Westfield Shopping Centre,Shepherds Bush,London.Just five mins walk for me to get here. Its part of their 1st birthday celebrations.Up first Beverley Knight is flanked by two backing singers and all the vocals are live but its a backing track instead of band.A short set of three songs but Bev looks and sings fantastic.Tracks "Beautiful Night" and "In Your Shoes" from her new album "100%" and a blistering cover of "Piece Of My Heart".She now goes on a full UK tour.Check out the clip of her on www.youtube.com singing "Black Butta" with Jools Holland. Its brilliant.....then London Community Gospel Choir sing five songs.14 of them on stage singing and clapping with great versions of "Aint No Stopping Us Now" and "Happy Birthday".....then Fleetwood Mac live at Wembley Arena,London.First of three shows at this venue as part of a UK tour.No new material to promote but there is another hits album "Very Best Of".There is no photographers pit and the band wants crowd to come down the front of stage and it works well. I end up 5 yards from Lindsey Buckingham for the whole show.He is in top form.Sometimes it felt like it was his show he dominated so much.On stage for a lengthy 2 hours 30 mins.Set inc "The Chain","Dreams","Go Insane"(Lindsey solo track), "Gypsy".Loads of fantastic guitar playing from Lindsay who uses his fingers instead of a pic. Also "Rhiannon","Second Hand News","Tusk","Sara", "Big Love","Stand Back"(Stevie solo track) and a great version of "Go Your Own Way".Encores were "World Turning" with a neat Mick Fleetwood drum solo at the end then a superb "Dont Stop" and finally "Silver Springs".A very good show.... 29 Oct 2009.Went to three good events tonight. Second half had Jim Davidson(very funny),Hilary O'Neil(funny),Bobby Crush dressed as Liberace playing Dusty Springfield songs???,then Bradley Walsh(very funny). The night finished with a clip of a Danny La Rue from the Palladium on the big screen singing "On Mother Kellys Doorstep" with all the acts on the stage inc Jin Davidson in a black dress.A nice event that brought you back to how popular Danny was in the 1970s. See aftershow page for this event................ 10 Oct 2009.On Saturday i was at two good events. First The Cult live at The Royal Albert Hall, London.A sold out show from these rockers. On stage for 1 hour 40 mins with two sets of 55 mins and 45 mins. Not sure who decided to put floor seats in tonight with this lively crowd.Got a great view six rows from stage in front of Billy Duffy whose white gibson guitar riffing really is fantastic.First set was all of the "Love" album inc "Nirvana" a superb "Rain". Also "The Phoenix" and a brilliant "She Sells Sanctuary".They still get quite a few rock chicks in the crowd even though singer Ian has gone for a greasy unwashed biker/tramp/slob look and looking at his tummy he seems to have ate 3 or 4 too many pies.We then had a 5 mins intermission then band came back to play some hits inc "Electric Ocean","Wildflower","Dirty Little Rockstar","Fire Woman" and "Love Removal Machine".For the encore we had a special treat as Cult members from the mid 80s Jamie Stewart(bass) and Mark Brzezicki(drums) joined Ian and Billy for reprises of "The Phoenix" and "She Sells Sanctuary"(what a classic gem that song is).A very good rock gig as always by The Cult... then 11.30pm to 1.30am was at the afterparty for The Pink Ribbon Ball,Dorchester Hotel,London.A posh party in aid of Breast Cancer. The auction is still on when we get there and the wine is flowing.Sprinter Linford Christie is here.I have a nice chat with ex Eastenders actress and singer Martine McCutcheon who tells she has her first novel "The Mistress" out in November.A good covers band got everyone on the floor and goodie bags for all at the end.A good one............... 09 Oct 2009.Porcupine Tree + Engineers live at Hammersmith Apollo,London. The support played an ok set of atmospheric tunes. Before tonight i had never heard any Porcupine Tree material. But i do know that without any tv or radio exposure and minimum press attention they have brought out a few albums and gigged lots and are now at the stage where they can sell out this venue and embark on a world tour. They played for two hours over two sets of 55 mins and 65 mins. The first set was tracks from their recent album "The Insider".Great musicians and great sound quality and neat visuals on the big screen behind them. They have Richard Barbieri on synths who used to be in the band Japan in the early 80s.I suppose their sound is modern prog metal. The second set featured older material inc "The Start Of Something Beautiful","Russia On Ice" and "Lazarus" and encores were "The Sound Of Muzak" and "Trains".The singer said how he had seen so many great bands on this stage over the years so it was a special gig for him.The show was decent enough but their music probably needs a few listens. This crowd loved it................ 08 Oct 2009.Gladys Knight + Tito Jackson live at Wembley Arena,London. Two shows at this big venue for GK always seemed a bit too much and its no surprise tonights first show is only half full. Up first we have Tito Jackson.Backed by a big funky band inc backing singers for a 60 mins set which had a few Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 songs in it inc "Rockin Robin","I Want You Back","Stop! The Love You Save","I'll Be There" and "Shake Your Body(Down To The Ground). His brothers Marlon and Jackie were here as was Mama Jackson who got great applause when introduced.A good set. Then "The Emperess Of Soul" Gladys Knight takes the stage to great applause for her UK "Farewell Tour" for a set lasting 1 hour 45 mins. Now in her mid 60s with over 50 years of live performing.A big stage production with three big screens and staircases.Odd thing was cameras here were filming it but this was not on the big screens so must be for a future dvd. Also her two security guys spent the whole evening in the front stalls stopping fans taking photos. In the 70s she had a spell with Motown with her famous Pips.Lots of fun stage banter and the voice is still there.Great tunes like "If I We're Your Woman" and "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" were fab as was covers of "Never Too Much" and "The Way We Were".She brought a "Pip" brother on for a couple of songs who was very funny with his stage antics. She sang "I Heard It Through The Grapevine","End Of The Road" and "If You Dont Love Me By Now".Then Dionne Warwick came on for a couple of songs "I'll Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" and "Thats What Friends Are For" before Gladys finished with brilliant versions of her big hit "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "I Will Survive". I even got a Down n Outz guitar pic with bands name on.In the interval i saw Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream and a friend saw Paul Simonen from The Clash.Had a chat with legendary rock photograper George Chin.Check out his pictures of top acts on his website www.georgechin.com Mott are very smartly dressed tonight as its being filmed.Only by two hand held recorders on stage though. Its pretty much the same great set.Ian adds two 60 seconds bursts of Dylan classics "Knocking On Heavens Door" and "Like A Rolling Stone".I am a few rows from stage in front of bassist Overend Watts who is very entertaining.Encores are the same.Joe Elliot again comes on for a brilliant "All The Young Dudes" but Ian Hunter told the crowd that Roger Taylor and Brian May said they were gonna come on for it but backed out.Not many bands make me feel like a teenager again but Motts shows here really were special.2010 dates seem certain.See aftershow page for this gig.......... 05 Oct 2009.Mott The Hoople + Glen Matlock live at Hammersmith Apollo,London.Show number 4 of 5 for Mott here and also my fourth show.Great to see Glen back on this famous stage where the Sex Pistols finally got to play last September.Takes a lot of bottle to be on your own with an acoustic guitar upon this huge space but Glen went down well.Eight songs in his 30 mins set of old and new.Lots of the crowd greeted "this is a song by The Rich Kids" with loud cheers.Always keen to push his more recent material that all went down well including brand new track "Born Running" from the upcoming album.Glen got all the crowd to sing along to a great finale of "Pretty Vacant".Job done i would say. Setlist was Somewhere Somehow,Burning Sounds,Yeah Right,On Something,Ambition,Stepping Stone,Born Running,Pretty Vacant....Saw Mick Jones again for his third visit and Rick Wills (ex Foreigner)during the interval.... like for Glens set i am two rows from the stage on the left with a great view for Motts set.The atmosphere is not as good as that amazing rammed Saturday show as there are blocks of empty seats in the balcony for tonight and tomorrow nights extra shows. Its still fantastic though. The set just builds and builds to a mega last 30 mins inc "Golden Age Of Rock n Roll","Honaloochie Boogie" "All The Way From Memphis","Roll Away The Stone" a superb "All The Young Dudes"(with Joe Elliot) and "Saturday Gigs".Classic 1970s Britsh rock. See aftershow page for this gig.................. 03 Oct 2009.Mott The Hoople + Rumble Strips live at Hammersmith Apollo,London.Show number 3 of 5 here for M.T.H.and also my third.Support are The Rumble Strips who i have seen before and played a decent set.Indie based with lashings of keyboards, sax and trombone.Tonight the Apollo is rammed solid just like the old days.In fact i am two rows from stage centre left which is the exact place i spent ten years on security in the 1980s.The atmosphere is electric.Clash legend Mick Jones is here again as is Eddie "Tenpole" Tudor. They play an extra five mins tonight as they throw in a couple of covers inc "Knocking On Heavens Door".The whole set gets better and better. The last 30 mins is mega. The backing singers are friends and family inc Tracie Hunter and Stan Tippens who was their singer before Ian and then became their manager and tonight they also had Mick Ronsons daughter.Joe Elliot came on again for "All The Young Dudes".Another really great show.Roll on shows four and five.See aftershow page for this show............ 02 Oct 2009.Mott The Hoople + Gemma Ray live at Hammersmith Apollo,London.Show number 2 of 5 here here for M.T.H.and also my second.Like yesterdays support act Gemma Ray is totally unsuitable for a Mott crowd. There must be a hundred decent rock bands that would have loved to support Mott at these gigs. For Mott i am five rows from the stage centre in front of flamboyant bassist Overend Watts.Friday and Saturday are the hardcore fans as these were the first two shows announced.Loads of overseas folks inc Americans.(Mott headlined Madison Square Garden in 1974).Its the same two hour set but the band have overcome the first night nerves from last night and the sound is much better.Tonights show was just fantastic. In the crowd i see Clash legend Mick Jones who is with his mate Tony James who used to be in Generation X.(Ian Hunter produced their "Valley Of The Dolls"album). Also here was Jimmy Page,Joe Elliot and back again Bobby Gillespie. The band are really rocking.Ian Hunter is running the show.Verden Allens battered old keyboards sound fab and its a real feeling here.Martin Chambers was solid again. The connection with Mott is that he played in a band with Verden Allen called The Cheeks way back in 1973/74 before he joined The Pretenders.Dale "Buffin" Griffin came out again for encores only. This show will get better and better.I might have to see all five shows. Joe Elliot did not come on stage tonight to help out with "All The Young Dudes".Lots of great merch on sale.I got the programme which is really good.See aftershow news for this gig ...... 01 Oct 2009.Mott The Hoople live at Hammersmith Apollo,London.First of five Hammersmith shows. Way back in 1973 as a mere 14 year old the first of my 1500 plus shows i saw at The Hammersmith Odeon was Mott The Hoople supported by Queen so was really looking forward to these shows.Loads of 50 year olds here just as excited as me for their first shows together since they split up in 1974.I spot Primal Screams Bobby Gillespie and one of Motts old drummers Morgan Fisher in the foyer where the merch are selling copies of tonights gig for 20 quid to be collected after the show.Get a great view in second row from stage on the right. Its a full two hour set.The first hour ticked along nicely but the second hour was much better.Ian Hunter at the grand old age of 70 looks in better shape than the others. The overall sound could have been a bit better. Two big screens show some nice 1970s Mott images.Martin Chambers from The Pretenders was solid all night on drums.Set inc "Rock n Roll Queen","Sweet Jane","One Of The Boys" and "The Moon Upstairs".Then a couple of acoustic songs. Not sure why Mick Ralphs had to sing Bad Companys "Ready For Love" when his voice is awful.(this song was like "Cant Get Enough" a Mott song originally that ended up on Bad Companys first album when Mick Ralphs took it with him when he left Mott The Hoople). Then "Born Late 58" and "Ballad Of Mott The Hoople" then it upped a gear for gems inc "Sweet Angeline","Walking With A Mountain","Golden Age Of Rock n Roll","Honaloochie Boogie" and "All The Way From Memphis".Encores had their unwell drummer Buffin take the stage on a second kit to great applause for a mega "Roll Away The Stone" and of course "All The Young Dudes"(joined by Joe Elliot from Def Leppard) then "Keep A Knocking" and a final "Saturday Gigs".Really great to see them live again and i will be back again for more.See aftershow page for this gig.............
