July 16, 2018

Monday 16 July 2018.
Meryl Streep and Cher will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Andy Garcia and Lily James for the world premiere of the Mamma Mia sequel.
The 2008 film version of the hit musical featuring Abba songs was a box office triumph and 10 years later the follow-up Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will premiere at London’s Hammersmith Apollo tonight.
Mamma Mia! the film is the biggest-selling DVD in the UK ever, according to the Official Charts Company.
Abba split up in the early 1980s so not many can say they saw them live but i saw them play in Feb 1977 at
The Royal Albert Hall....the gigs i went to in the week before that gig were Bryan Ferry and Frank Zappa
and in the week following that gig i went to see Eddie & The Hot Rods and The Damned...pretty eclectic..

Sunday 15 July 2018...4pm to 6pm...
World Cup Final in Moscow, Russia.
France 4 Croatia 2....nice to see lots of goals...
Didier Deschamps becomes only the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager.
Deschamps was France’s World Cup-winning captain in 1998 but experienced the disappointment of seeing his side lose on home turf in the final of the European Championship in 2016.

Saturday 14 July 2018.
BILLY JOEL plays Madison Square Garden for the 100th time in a few days.
“I really can’t get my head around it,” says Billy Joel of his record-setting 100th show at Madison Square Garden set for this July 18....Elton John is in second place with 65 shows played at MSG...
Billy has had the same booking agent/agency for the past 40 years since he first played there.
Even more amazing considering Joel hasn’t had a manager since 1989 (having one squander a reported $30 million dollars does that to a person) or released an album in the last 25 years (he hasn’t wanted or needed to).

Saturday 14 July 2018...live on ITV 3pm to 5pm...
World Cup 2018 third place play off game.
England 0 Belgium 2
A bit lacklustre from England but fourth place is better than anyone could have hoped for.
English Football Anthem 'Three Lions' this week has gone back to number one in the singles chart.
‘Three Lions’, which was originally released by The Lightning Seeds and Baddiel & Skinner back in 1996 and was re-released in 1998, topping the charts 20 years ago, has accompanied England’s progression through the tournament in Russia.
Despite the negative advance worries, Russia did a great job of hosting a fantastic World Cup.

Friday 13 July 2018.
ALANIS MORISSETTE + RUTH ANNE live at Hammersmith Apollo, London.
Alanis Morissette plays the second of two sold out shows at Hammersmith Apollo.
Time to dust off my copy of her multi million selling album from 1995 'Jagged Little Pill'
which includes many mega tunes including 'Ironic' and 'You Oughta Know'.
'Jagged Little Pill' topped the charts in thirteen countries; with sales of over 33 million units worldwide, it is one of the best-selling albums of all time and made Morissette the first Canadian to achieve double diamond sales.
It has sold over 15 million copies in America alone.
I saw Alanis three times in 1995/1996 when she was touring the album and her drummer was
Taylor Hawkins who in 1997 joined The Foo Fighters.
-----------------------------
Support act RUTH ANNE & band arrived on stage at 7.45pm and played a 30 mins set of decent tunes.
Ruth Anne is a young Irish singer and songwriter.
By the time Alanis arrives on stage the venue is totally rammed and buzzing with anticipation.
ALANIS MORISSETTE arrived on stage at 8.50pm and played for one hour 45 mins.
Alanis strides back and forth across the stage, she has cropped her trademark long, dark hair.
She looked like Perry Farrell from Janes Addiction and the way he prowls around the stage in the same way.
Alanis in the 1990s was a much more interesting aspect of girl power & feminism than The Spice Girls.
Alanis still has loads of loyal women fans here all singing out loudly to her songs tonight.
Superb tracks from her classic album 'Jagged Little Pill' were played tonight and their
fantastic lyrics still pack a punch.
A great show.
Full Alanis Morissette setlist played tonight...

Friday 13 July 2018.
Fact of the day.
Current England Football Manager Gareth Southgate introduced The Sex Pistols in Finsbury Park, London
in front of 30,000 fans in June 1996.
Twenty-four hours after helping England squeeze into the semi-final of Euro 96, Southgate accompanied Stuart Pearce to the punk veterans' reunion thrash. Pearce, partial to a pogo in his youth, was invited to be master of ceremonies. In the spirit of collective responsibility, he shared the duties with his team-mate.
It was the first Sex Pistols gig in London since 1977.
That gig was one of the best gigs i have ever seen and it is available as 'Filthy Lucre Live'.
The opening track 'Bodies' was stunning , and every track after was totally lethal.
Oddly enough it was the same year that KISS original members re-united for a world tour.

Monday 09 July 2018...6.45pm to 11pm...
OLAFUR ARNALDS - new album playback party - Spiritland, 9 Stable Street, Kings Cross, London N1.
We are in the very cool 80 capacity - Spiritland - which has been described as a 'vinyl audio geeks paradise'.
Spiritland’s is one of London’s first listening bars , the venue is also home to a radio production suite.
They have the best speakers money can buy.
For those in the know, the sound system has been custom designed by Living Voice, the company is responsible for the Vox Olympian speakers. The setup will be shown off each weekday from 6 PM, when an album is played from start to finish on a Kuzma Stabi XL2 turntable.
Spiritland also sells CDs , vinyl , headphones etc.
Ólafur Arnalds (now aged 31) s an Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer from Mosfellsbær, Iceland.
Ólafur Arnalds mixes strings and piano with loops and beats crossing over from ambient/electronic to pop.
Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds returned earlier this year with stunning new track ‘re:member’, recorded on pioneering new Stratus software, two ”self-playing, semi-generative player pianos”.
He’s now announced details of his new album of the same name, his fourth studio album which will be out in August via Mercury KX / Universal.
From 7pm to 8.15pm we had a playback of the new album, track by track, and Olafur was here to talk
about the tracks in a relaxed and informative way and he chatted to guests after the playback.
Mixing the opposing forces of a sweaty dancefloor and the icy ocean, the album tracks feature twinkly piano
behind forceful thuds of strings and rises and falls with ease.
‘re:member’ comes out on 24th August, and the Icelander is set to take the record on a world tour, which runs for the rest of the year, finishing in his hometown of Reykjavik just before Christmas.
In May 2018 he sold out The Royal Albert Hall and returns for a full UK tour that includes
two nights at The London Palladium on 30/31 Oct 2018.
Ólafur Arnalds won the award for Original Television Music in 2014 at that year’s UK BAFTA Television Craft Awards. The award is for his music in the hit ITV drama, Broadchurch, which was the highest-rated drama on the UK’s major commercial channel, ITV1, with an audience of 9.6 million viewers.
Complimentary drinks and food for all guests including various cocktails, various spirits & mixers,
wines, beers and canapés.
www.olafurarnalds.comVisit his website here for more info and list of tour dates.
All guests got a nice goodie bag which had a vinyl album from the roster of Mercury KX.
Universal’s Decca Records Group recently launched a new record label, Mercury KX – dubbed ‘the first post-classical imprint operating within a major music group’.
It is a fresh incarnation of the Mercury Classics label.
Already home to Icelandic composer Òlafur Arnalds, Mercury KX has added multiple new artists to its growing roster, including London duo Solomon Grey, Australian composer and pianist Luke Howard, and the mysterious, masked pianist Lambert – whose self-released debut album featured input from Nils Frahm.

Monday 09 July 2018.
Very sad news that Spurs football legend ALAN GILZEAN has passed away aged 79.
He spent a decade with Spurs from 1964 to 1974 and scored many goals for them.
He was part of that great Spurs team from that era that included Pat Jennings, Cyril Knowles,
Alan Mullery, Steve Perryman, Martin Chivers and Jimmy Greaves.
Gilzean helped Spurs win the FA Cup in 1967, the League Cup in 1971 and 1973, and the UEFA Cup in the 71/72 season.
The goalscoring idol was diagnosed with a brain tumour a short time ago, Dundee Football Club confirmed.
In a statement released on Twitter, the Spurs said: "Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our legendary former striker Alan Gilzean.

Sunday 08 July 2018.
ERIC CLAPTON + SANTANA live in Hyde Park, London.
Show number three of British Summer Time here in Hyde Park with another 65,000 capacity crowd.
Rumours that it may be Eric's last ever UK show has resulted in the massive show selling out in April.
I have seen Eric play live around 30 times since 1976 including many of his Royal Albert Hall shows,
plus i was at all four re-union shows by Cream at The Royal Albert Hall in 2005.
I saw him headline Hyde Park back in 1996.
Eric Clapton is now aged 73.
I have seen Santana over 15 times since 1975 when they headlined Hammersmith Odeon.
Carlos Santana is now aged 70.
---------------------
Another sweltering hot day in London so that must have made Carlos Santana feel right at home.
I caught 20 mins of the 60 mins set by SANTANA.
Good to see and hear their percussion and guitar based Latin rock sound again.
Full Santana setlist played tonight...

ERIC CLAPTON arrived on stage at 8.15pm and played for around 1 hour 40 mins.
Pretty much the same length of time on stage as his Royal Albert Hall shows.
He has enough material to easily play a two hour show but never does.
Pretty much a setlist similar to his Royal Albert Hall shows...but outdoors.
A pretty basic no frills show as you would expect from an Eric show.
Eric focusing on the music rather than any theatrical extras.
There are big screens which is something he never has at the smaller Royal Albert Hall.
Eric's guitar sound was fantastic and his band were top notch.
He was joined by Marcella Detroit who performed great vocals for two songs.
Marcella was part of Eric Clapton's backing band in the 1970s. She most famously co-wrote "Lay Down Sally" for him, which was a #3 hit in the USA in 1978, and contributed other songs for his albums No Reason to Cry, Slowhand, and Backless.
Marcella would later form her own group Shakespeare's Sister.
Lots of classic Eric tunes played along with some of his fave blues cover versions.
For the encore it was great to see Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton trading guitar solos.
A great show even though i feel Eric is more suited to smaller indoor shows.
Full Eric Clapton setlist played tonight...

BURT BACHARACH with orchestra live at The Royal Festival Hall, London.
Legendary American singer songwriter plays the second of two shows at this venue.
Burt has composed hundreds of popular hit songs from the late 1950s through the 1980s, many in collaboration with popular lyricist Hal David. A six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time Academy Award winner, Bacharach's songs have been recorded by more than 1,000 different artists. He has written over 70 US and 50 UK Top 40 hits.He is considered one of the most important composers of 20th-century popular music.
In 2000 i saw Burt Bacharach & Hal David perform at The Royal Albert Hall with guest vocalists.
Burt is closely associated with 'easy listening' acts including Dionne Warwick and The Carpenters.
---------------------------
An older crowd here who can afford £100 for front stalls tickets.
BURT was on stage from 8.10pm and played for around 2 hours 10 mins.
Now aged 90, yes 90 there is no walking stick and he looks pretty good.
Burt got a full standing ovation when he arrived on stage and when he departed.
Burt said "it's hot in here" and took his jacket off to reveal an England Football shirt with the name Bacharach
on the back along with the number 9 which went down well with the crowd.
Burt said "thank god the game was played during the afternoon and not in the evening".
Burt said a few words about many of the songs before they were performed.
Burt played the piano and sang a few songs but most vocals were done by the three singers
who were 2 x female and 1 x male.
Around 30 musicians on stage when you add singers, band and orchestra members together.
American singer Melanie Federer sung a couple of his newer songs.
Many of the songs you will know, but not that Burt wrote them.
The strings sounded fantastic.
A very enjoyable show from this songwriting legend.
Burt Bacharach setlist tonight included...

Friday 06 July 2018.
ROGER WATERS live in Hyde Park, London.
As part of his lengthy world tour...this massive 65,000 capacity show sold out in April.
Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters is playing regular tours around the world these days.
I have seen him at The 02 Arena and Wembley Stadium over the past few years.
It was thirteen years ago this week that i was at that famous Pink Floyd re-union show in Hyde Park.
Just 20 mins on stage but the only time Roger Waters has played as part of Pink Floyd since 1981.
The night before we were at rehearsals in Hyde Park where Pink Floyd and Madonna went through their sets.
I saw Pink Floyd in 1977 at the height of punk rock and didn't really like them back then.
----------------------
Another lovely hot & sunny day in London.
This was show number one of the six British Summer Time concerts in Hyde Park.
As I get older I am not keen on big outdoor gigs like this but it has to be done if the act is good.
ROGER WATERS was on stage for 2 hours 15 mins over two sets of 60 mins and 75 mins.
A massive set of big screens that make one long one that takes up the entire length of the stage.
Great visuals on the screens mixing pre-recorded images and live footage.
The sound was incredible as there were giant speakers all around the venue so there were sounds
of helicopters, air raid sirens and machine gun fire all behind and around you.
Roger is looking good for age 74 in his trademark black t-shirt & black trousers.
Roger has a top notch band with him including a great guitarist for the David Gilmour parts.
Two lookalike female backing singers did a good job.
Roger Waters took aim at world leaders and championed human rights as he rocked Hyde Park in a politically-charged gig.
Roger treated the thousands gathered to Pink Floyd prog-rock classics while lambasting the likes of Donald Trump.
Crowds cheered as the words “Trump is a pig” were emblazoned on stage alongside funny edited images of the US president.
I doubt if they will be exchanging Christmas cards.
Around a dozen school children dressed as Guantanamo Bay inmates were on stage to mime
the chorus to 'Another Brick In The Wall'.
The second half was a bit more theatrical as four iconic chimneys similar to Battersea Power Station
sprouted out and we had an inflatable pig meandering around the venue with the slogan 'Stay Human'
and a giant silver ball balloon floated over our heads along with some nice lasers.
Loads of mega Floyd classics played and we had a fireworks display at the end of 'Comfortably Numb'.
A great show.
Full Roger Waters setlist played tonight....

Thursday 05 July 2018...3pm to 11pm...
HOUSE FESTIVAL at Kenwood House,Hampstead Heath, London NW3.
After a few years in West London this festival has now moved to North London.
Again around 7000/8000 guests have paid £250 each to be here.
The ticket includes all bands, all drinks, all food, all funfair rides for the entire day.
It is a private event and tickets are only available for members of Soho House private members clubs
and the various sponsors and do not go on sale to the general public.
There were several bands on but we opted to see the three headliners and enjoy the sunshine and the
food and drinks as the other acts played in the background.
Complimentary Collet champers, different cocktails and spirits, wines, beers, soft drinks and food included
Cheeseburgers, Hot Dogs, Pizza, Hog Roast, Lobster Salad, Meat Balls, Roast Chicken ,doughnuts etc.
-----------------------
RITA ORA arrived on stage at 6.25pm and played for 40 mins.
Rita Ora looked great in a yellow outfit and her long hair was flowing everywhere.
Rita had a big screen showing images like all the other headline acts.
The females here really loved it as Rita played a set of her best known songs.
-----------------------
MANIC STREET PREACHERS arrived on stage at 7.55pm and played for 55 mins.
I have seen The Manics around 20 times over the past 25 years.
The Manics are playing many shows this summer as they continue to promote 'Resistance Is Futile'
which is their thirteenth album and was released on 13 April 2018.
Supported by five singles, the most since their debut, the album was received with positive reviews
from music critics, and debuted and peaked at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.
They play a shorter set tonight than usual but there were loads of older gems and a couple of new tracks.
A great set.
Full Manics setlist played tonight...

NILE RODGERS & CHIC arrived on stage at 9.40pm and played for 75 mins.
I saw Chic twice in 1979 during the heyday of disco and i also saw him play just last month.
A few years ago Niles survived cancer and made a promise to himself to record and tour more than ever,
which explains why he is playing shows all over the UK this summer.
Niles has a new album out on 14 Sept 2018.
They really are the perfect party band as it is non stop hits related to Niles incredible career.
A great show.

QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT live at The 02 Arena, London.
Queen + Adam Lambert are playing more UK arena shows just six months after their previous UK tour.
They will again be showcasing the spectacular stage production conceived around the 40th anniversary of
Queen's 'News of the World' album.
I saw the show at The 02 Arena last year which was excellent.
I have seen Queen live over 20 times including a dozen shows with Freddie Mercury.
The first time was in Dec 1973 when they were a support act to Mott The Hoople at Hammersmith Odeon.
Pretty amazing that i first saw Queen as a support act over 44 YEARS ago.
They were the first of over 2000 gigs I have seen at that one venue.
There is no doubt I will always have a soft spot for them for that reason.
-----------------------
Tonight is their second of their three London arena shows this week.
Before the show started i bumped into Rusty Egan (The Rich Kids / Visage / dj etc).
QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT arrived on stage at 8.20pm and played for 2 hours 10 mins.
I have a perfect view right of the stage for this visually brilliant show.
It is the same mega stage production as last year with many big screens, loads of lights and lasers
and a long stage extension and a shorter one in the design of Brian May's guitar.
Both Brian May and Roger Taylor have heads full of grey hair but everyone loves them.
Queen's catalog of classic songs appeal to every generation and you have to remember that
Queen's musical 'We Will Rock You' was in the West End for over a decade.
Queen were great with Paul Rodgers but there is no doubt that since Adam Lambert has been with
them , they have certainly become an even bigger live attraction.
With his camp banter and many glamourous costumes, he is a perfect showman.
A few songs in the middle were played at the end of the stage extension.
Brian May performed his guitar solo 20ft up in the air.
Freddie Mercury appeared on the big screens a few times to massive applause.
The final 30 mins of anthems were amazing with 'Radio GaGa' , 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
and encores 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions'.
A great show.

Monday 02 July 2018.
Sad news that ALAN LONGMUIR has passed away.
Alan Longmuir, the founder member of the Bay City Rollers has died following a short illness.
The Edinburgh-born musician died in hospital this morning at the age of 70 surrounded by loved ones after being flown home from Mexico two weeks ago where he had contracted an illness.
In the early 1970s Bay City Rollers were a boy band as massive as One Direction or Take That.
I saw Alan when BCR re-united in Dec 2015 and Dec 2016 when they played Hammersmith Apollo.

Sunday 01 July 2018.
After the success of The Damned and Iggy Pop punk shows at The Royal Albert Hall.
Now it's the turn of The Buzzcocks to headline this iconic venue.
Only downside is that it's around a year away...tickets have gone on sale this weekend...
On Friday 21 June 2019 The Royal Albert Hall is delighted to present a one-off evening
featuring three pioneering bands from the first generation of punk and new wave:
Buzzcocks, The Skids and Penetration....that is a must see gig...

Saturday 30 June 2018.
THE SKIDS + THEATRE OF HATE live at Shepherds Bush Empire, London.
Thankfully The Skids are playing another UK tour this year after reforming last year.
Before last year it was over 30 years since their last UK tour.
They are playing extra shows by public demand in celebration of their 40th anniversary.
I missed them last year as their London show clashed with Guns N Roses at London Stadium.
I saw The Skids seven times in their heyday period from 1979 to 1981 which included headline
shows at The Rainbow, Hammersmith Palais & Hammersmith Odeon.
The sadly missed guitarist Stuart Adamson was in The Skids before he started Big Country.
The Skids had 5 x Top 40 hit singles in the UK.
With support from Theatre of Hate who were also around in the early 1980s and are best known for their
Top 40 hit from 1982 'Do You Believe in the Westworld'.
I saw them as support act in 1981 and as a headline act in 1982 at Hammersmith Palais.
------------------------
The audience is pretty much full of blokes in their 50s.
THEATRE OF HATE arrived on stage at 8pm and played for around 45 mins.
Always good to see singer Kirk Brandon and hear his powerful voice.
They finished with a great version of 'Do You Believe in the Westworld'.
Full Theatre of Hate setlist played tonight...
Original Sin
'63
Conquistador
Facade
Americanos
Legion
Do You Believe In The Westworld?
--------------------------
After over 35 years i finally get to see The Skids play live again.
THE SKIDS arrived on stage at 9.10pm and played for around 80 mins.
Singer Richard Jobson is now aged 57 but still does plenty of his energetic dancing.
The Skids go back a long way as Richard pulled up Top Of The Pops djs Jimmy Saville
and Dave Lee Travis as 'scumbags'...they both introduced the band on TOTP.
The videos are up on YouTube from their TOTP appearances.
It soon gets lively down the front as folks are slamming into each other.
Loads of older classics played along with a few newies from their 2018 album 'Burning Cities'.
Loads of stunning guitar riffs from Bruce Watson (who also plays in Big Country).
His son is on second guitar.
Their biggest hit 'Into The Valley' was played at the end of their main set.
A great show.
The Skids full setlist played tonight...

Saturday 30 June 2018.
Logan Plant (son of Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant ) spent several years playing in bands without success.
Even with his famous father's name, he could not get a record deal.
Now he is a brewer and it's all taken off.
Look, we’ve got a dream to build,” says Logan Plant, 39, CEO and co-founder of Beavertown Brewery, where right now everything seems glass half-full.
Birds are chirping and the sun is shining in Tottenham Hale, where his Beavertown brewery is sited. Last week Plant sealed a £40 million cash injection from Heineken, which will help build ‘Beaverworld’, a new brewery and visitor site.

Tuesday 26 June 2018...I went to three events tonight...
6.15pm to 6.45pm
SEX PISTOLS - Midnight Studios x Shane Gonzales - launch party - Selfridges, London W1.
Drawing from his deep-rooted love of everything punk, designer Shane Gonzales reworked original artwork from the band’s archive and silhouettes associated with the British punk rock movement of the late ’70s. Designed in collaboration with Bravado, the range is comprised of alternative styled streetwear cuts displaying imagery evocative of The Sex Pistols iconic debut album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. Some standout pieces from the capsule include the sleeveless T-shirt print hoodie, record packaging scarf and extra large God Save The Queen Tote bag.
We are in a small section on the first floor where there is a dj playing some (not punk) tunes.
I am the only old punk rocker as it's the younger fashion of crowd of maybe just 50 or 60 guests.
A bit weird to see The Sex Pistols items on sale like this in somewhere like Selfridges.

TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN live at Dingwalls , London.
Tyler & his boys are a great and up & coming American blues rock band.
They have supported Guns N Roses several times and are on a UK tour to promote their second album,
which came out on Spinefarm Records.
I saw them last year at The Ramblin' Man Festival in Maidstone.
They return to play this years Ramblin' Man Festival on Sunday 01 July.
------------------------
Nice to be back at this venue that i went too quite often in the 1980s including solo shows by
three members of The New York Dolls...David Johansen, Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain.
TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN arrived on stage at 9pm and played for 90 mins.
Tyler certainly has all the boxes ticked for a great frontman.
Aged 27 with youthful rock star good looks, a great guitarist, great vocals and plenty of charisma.
Over the past couple of years the band have built up a good following in the UK.
Tyler is clearly very happy to be playing his music all over the world.
Loads of good solid blues rock songs played in the set.
A couple of times he jumps in the crowd with his guitar for a solo.
A very enjoyable show and the only way is up for this band I reckon.
A few minutes after they finished the show they came out to the merch stand to say hello to all.
