Aftershow News: May 18, 2011
17 May 2011.Roger Waters live at The 02 Arena,London. This was my third show of the six that Roger did here.At the weekend shows i found out where the bands hospitality area was so got to venue early tonight for a "he who dares Rodney" visit. For some reason they had erected a tent near the entrance to the Level 4 seating area so thousands of punters were walking past it without knowing the band were all in there. Usually it would be upstairs in the third floor bar.(The corporate hospitailty for this event was held at Proud2 ex Matter around 100 yards away). We get in from 7pm to 8pm.Nice and comfy with free booze and around 100 people.Band members flitting in and out.Roger Waters turns up for a few mins with his personal security. Its all friends and family so nobody is hassling him.As he leaves we ask for a signature on a Floyd item each and a photo each with him.Roger turns into Mr Grumpy and says "Make it quick",security guy says "No arms around Roger".We get a good photo and a good signature.Job done.Into our seats at 8pm for the show that started at 8.15pm.They used it at the interval and after but we stayed clear.Maybe it was because they could either stay open later here or maybe the band have a lot of smokers and the third floor bar is a nightmare for smokers and this tent was only 50 yards from outside smoking area ................. 06 May 2011.AC/DC World Premiere of their new dvd/blu-ray "Live At River Plate" at Hammersmith Apollo,London.A big afterparty in the balcony bar for around 300 people.Dj in the background playing rock classics and there is freebie Deleon Tequila cocktails all night for all.I was there from 10.30pm to midnight but it was on until 1am.Sadly AC/DC do not turn up.All of Stereophonics are here and i have a chat with Kelly Jones. He says to me "Hello Ray Does This Count As Another Gig Then?".Kelly is great as he always mingles with the punters for a drink and was still there when i left. Also here was Channel 5 tv presenter Matthew Wright.SONY did a great job tonight as for a cinema event this was just superb. The dvd presentation and the afterparty really rocked ..... 02 April 2011.11pm to 1am.Big Audio Dynamite live at Shepherds Bush Empire,London.Aftershow in Level One bar that is packed and buzzing as its like an old punk rockers reunion bash. We stay for an hour then shoot off............... 07 March 2011.Duran Duran at Shepherds Bush Empire,London.Aftershow party in the Level One bar for around 70 people.I was expecting a few faces here as Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon are always out and about at events in London but its more family and friends.I ask the barmaid the usual silly question "Is It A Free Bar?".Shes says "No,They Have Actually Put The Prices Up Again".A pint of Tuborg lager is now an eye watering £4.45.The last time i checked i thought the Empire was in Shepherds Bush not Mayfair. No wonder i always mention it in reviews if i get free drinks at an event when some places charge folks these mad robbing prices.Members of DD start to turn up inc Nick Rhodes,Roger Taylor and the new guitarist but Simon Le Bon and John Taylor stay in the dressing room area.I stayed for just over an hour ........ 16 Feb 2011.Edwyn Collins live at Shepherds Bush Empire,London.Aftershow for around 75 people in the Level One bar.I stayed for an hour.No free booze but lots of people here i know.Sex Pistol Paul Cook(he plays drums in Edwyns band) and his wife and daughter are here and i know a couple of Pauls mates. All the band turn up inc Edwyn Collins with his wife Grace. Also Ryan from The Cribs,Romeo from The Magic Numbers and Gem from Oasis or ex Oasis now Liam G??.Also a couple of friends from Cadiz Music who produced the recent "Oil City Confidential" feature film based on Dr Feelgood and Canvey Island. They said they have started work on a feature film based on The Cockney Rejects and East London so that will be good to see when it comes out. Also Ray McVeigh from Paul Cooks post Sex Pistols band The Professionals was here.An enjoyable little aftershow 15 Feb 2011.The BRIT Awards live at The 02 Arena,London. The aftershow parties for The BRITS are always pretty good as there is a lot of them. This year there were five i think. The official one at the venue in the supertent. Also Universal Nusic at The Savoy Hotel,SONY Music at Gaucho at The 02 Complex,EMI had a boat party leaving from Greenwich pier at The 02 and rumours that Warner Music had a party at the new W Hotel in the West End.The official party has a big crowd of over 2000 people and more fun things going on so headed there from 10.15pm to 1am.As usual none of the acts from the awards are here. Its a pay bar for all here but got a Mastercard wristband for free booze in their area. There was a Victorian Fairground theme. For food there was bacon rolls, candyfloss, cupcakes, popcorn and sweets. There was a croquet lawn, fortune tellers,a dancefloor and dj,dressing up in Victorian outfits area, free photo booths.Good fun. Then 1am to 2am a couple of mins away is the SONY Music party at Gaucho at The 02.The free booze is still flowing and the dj is still spinning but only 100 of the 300 guests are left and any celebs that were here have long gone. A great party and a great day.For me The Q Awards lasted a total of 11 hours . 19 Oct 2010.Ronnie Wood live at The Ambassadors Theatre,Covent Garden,London WC2 at 7.30pm and 10.30pm to promote his new solo album "I Feel Like Playing".Between the two shows a dozen of is inc Duff McKagan,Glen Matlock and Kelly Jones go to Ronnies dressing room which is tiny.We quickly move over to the posh Ivy Club Bar across the road.Ronnie follows us and Jimmy White is also there. There is loads of Ronnies art hanging. We stay here for 45 mins then back to the venue.....then after Ronnies second show back to the Ivy Club Bar for the afterparty from 12.15am to 2am.About 100 people. Its a pay bar but they have laid on some food.Glen Matlock left after the first show.Ronnie Wood is here with his new girlfriend,Kelly Jones is as entertaining as ever.He has lived in Fulham the last five years.I told him that AC/DC played the pub that is mere yards from his house. He was amazed i had seen AC/DC 18 times with Bon Scott. Palacio De Deportes,Madrid,Spain.Even though i had seen seven KISS UK shows only a month ago i still simply had to see a show overseas. Here in sunny Spain at the same venue i saw Iron Maiden play in 2005.This is no ordinary show as Rod MacSween who is KISS UK and Europe booking agent as well as many other great rock bands has very kindly offered me a guest list place to The KISS Meet And Greet Experience for promoting KISS on this website. For me its an amazing gesture as this usually costs 1000 Euros as KISS and other bands are getting fed up with their autographs being sold on ebay.Get to box office at 6pm to collect laminate and wristband. There are about 40 Spanish KISS fans with me.We are told to meet later left of stage. We are allowed in the venue a few mins before the general crowd are let in.Sadly we cannot take up a front row view because of the meet and greet later. The venue itself is a bit of an ugly concrete slab of a building but the atmosphere is fantastic.A rabid sold out crowd of maybe 12 to 15,000.At 7.45pm we go backstage. We see KISS manager Doc McGhee and Gene Simmons partner and son.We are in a semi circle and told how things will go.We get a bag of swag.A set of four KISS guitar picks,a Sonic Boom tour programme,a glossy 10" by 8" thats presigned by the band,a larger print that is the main item to be signed later by all the band. The band turn up in full costume to cheers. We get two photos each with the band which taken by a photographer who will send the photos in a weeks time."Sonic Boom" album is on in the background and Paul is singing along to it so we get a kinda private little show. Then its autograph time and chats.I get five Gene, four Paul, two Tommy, two Eric.Paul seems impressed when i tell him i was at seven of the UK shows. The hour here goes so quickly but it was a totally amazing and unique experience that any KISS fan would really love to be at.Thanks again to Rod MacSween for arranging it........... 24 May 2010.Mike Batt live at The Cadogan Hall, Chelsea,London.10.30pm to midnight.Aftershow party was held at The Kitts club in Sloane Square about 100 yards from the venue.A big crowd of over 200 here at this upmarket venue with freebie wines, beers and hot and cold grub for all. Those here inc Mike Batt,Katie Melua,Chris Spedding and Jim Cregan.Mike Batt may not be the coolest artist on the planet but this aftershow was way 12.30am.Aftershow party in the balcony bar.About 50 people here.Fairly tame as expected.Natalie and all the band turn up and are friendly and chatty.A major plus was that nine out of ten aftershows at this venue its a pay bar but tonights its a free bar.............. 03 May 2010.Iggy Pop And The Stooges live at The Hammersmith Apollo,London.Over 100 people at the aftershow in the balcony bar.Lots of people here i know at this gig.Sex Pistol Glen Matlock is here with Patti Paladin.(Sex Pistol Paul Cook was at the show the previous night).Noel Fielding is here.I get stuck in a corner with them so not sure which other guests are here.At the gig i saw Nick Cave and a couple of Bad Seeds. Also TV Smith and Gaye Advert. All the Stooges turned up but not Iggy or maybe he did after i left.I stayed for an hour but was still going when i had to depart ................ 10 April 2010.Bad Company + Joe Perry Project live at The Brighton Centre.Aftershow in the catering area of this venue. Its the same area as where i had a coffee with Jimmy Page when Whitesnake played here three or four years ago. There is no bar here so its just coffees only for 50 people for an hour after the show.Paul Rodgers and Joe Perry do not turn up but we get the four other members of Bad Co inc Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke.Met a couple of nice guys from Paris who had come over just for the gig so respect to them for making the effort........... 07 April 2010.Beverley Knight live at The Royal Albert Hall,London.Massive afterparty in one of the venues downstairs bar areas for over 200 people.Nice to see lots of genuine friends and fans here.Annie Lennox was here for few mins but kept geting pestered so a BK tour manager rescued here and took her gang backstage. The half caste girl from Coronation Stret was here. I stayed for an hour and it was still rocking when i left.Beverley Knight and all the band members friendly and chatty to all.............. 11 Mar 2010.Joss Stone live at Shepherds Bush Empire,London.Aftershow in Level 1 bar for 50 people for an hour after the show.Joss Stone turns up and is friendly and chatty to all.Sadly no sign of Jeff Beck who came on stage with her earlier.Always nice to see pr legend Alan Edwards from Outside Org who look after Amy Winehouse,David Bowie,Joss Stone and loads more. Pretty tame party compared to the Love Never Dies party from a couple of days ago............. 09 Mar 2010.11.30pm to 1.30am.Love Never Dies musical at The Adelphi Theatre,The Strand,London. As i was at the Hard Rock Cafe event that night i did not see the musical itself which is Andrew Lloyd Webbers sequel to Phantom Of The Opera. This was a mega bash which they can easily afford as its taken in millions in advance ticket sales.Over 1000 guests at the opening whisked into the City to Old Billingsgate by routemaster buses for this huge party.Theme was Coney Island Funfair with loads of free food and booze and sideshow attractions.Deckchairs everywhere.Graham Norton and a couple of X Factor folks were here but a lot of the faces from the show earlier dont bother with the party.Did not even see Andrew LLoyd Webber.Nice goodie box of silver trinkets from Bokks Of London. If only all aftershows were this lavish and great ........ 05 Mar 2010.Stiff Little Fingers live at The Kentish Town Forum,London.Aftershow in the balcony bar for 50 folks for an hour after the show. All of SLF turn up and are friendly and chatty as always.Great to see me old muckers Alan Parker and Simon Leppington here.Shame i had to leave early to get my last train.......... 02 Mar 2010.KISS live at The Islington Academy,London.Early finish at the gig and some 200 of the 800 crowd were guest list list folks so plenty of people in the upstairs bar for free beers and wines.Lots of staff from KISS gig promoters Live Nation and gig sponsors Classic Rock Magazine. The only faces i see are the chaps from The Mighty Boosh comedy team inc Noel Fielding,Mike Fielding and Julian. Not surprising that none of KISS or their inner sanctum are here.Have a couple of drinks then go to a nice Italian pizza place with all The Mighty Boosh gang near The Screen On The Green cinema where i saw a Sex Pistols secret gig in 1977.About 10 of us inc Noels mum and dad who i worked with back in the old days.Noel has been out a lot with his Kasabian mates the past couple of weeks and was on stage with them at the NME Awards last week.I told Noel it was Damon Albarn who threw the sausage at Kasabian and Courtney Love.He text Serge the bass player of Kasabian the news....... 16 Feb 2010.10.30pm to 3am.The BRIT Awards aftershow at Earls Court Arena,London. After the main awards show everyone hangs about to network for 30 mins then upstairs for an hour to the official party at the venue. All the dinner folks are invited so there is a massive dancefloor,a band doing some cover songs ,a bingo area and other stuff.Nice and lively but no artists here and no free booze so we depart at midnight for record company parties.Get to The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge for The Universal Music bash which is always the best. Loads of photographers outside snapping away. Getting here at 12.30am and stay for an hour.Very busy and lively.Freebie cocktails and grub.Lady Gaga is stil here wearing her head gear and fashion chappie Henry Holland is dancing but other artists have left or are in a vip area. Then 2am to 3am its The Warner Music bash at China White.Again a lively crowd and dancefloor.Free booze flowing.A youngish crowd so maybe some of them were not at The Awards itself and no artists here or have left already. Most artists get their photo taken then have one quick drink and do a runner at these parties. Got home totally knackered but a great day out. Other bashes on inc Sony Music at The Kensington Hotel,EMI at The Supper Club (ex Acklam Hall) in Ladbroke Grove and Lindsay Lohan hosted a party at Altitude in Millbank ...... 07 Jan 2010.Rich Kids live at Islington Academy,London.11.15pm to 12.45am was drinks in the venues upstairs bar for 100 people. As there were so many acts on tonight lots of people here that performed inc Glen Matlock,Midge Ure, Rusty Egan,Steve New,Mick Jones,Tony James,Patti Palladin,Terry Edwards,Gary Kemp,Maggie Ronson,Tracie Hunter and a few others like Jj Gary Crowley,Spandau Ballet manager Steve Dagger(told me Spandau are playing Isle Of Wight Festival and Isle Of Man Festival in the summer) and Xavier the Stereophonics drummer who has played on Glen Matlocks upcoming album.Lots of people here i knew at the gig and the afterparty. The whole evening was just superb..... 23 Dec 2009.Public Image Ltd live live at The Electric Ballroom,Camden,London.End of tour party at Zen Sai Bar in Inverness Road 100 yards across the road from the venue.About 100 people here.A full free bar all night 11.15pm to 2.30am. David Essex is a pure gent and he greets everyone in the room. This makes a nice change from posing rock stars who shield themselves with a couple of friends and hide in the corner. The UK's #1 Gig-Goer
In November 2008 the BBC confirmed me as the UK's number one gig-goer. The jacket was a gig-going prize from Q Magazine a few years ago. I do not wear it outside of the house let alone out to gigs!
Over 5,500 gigs now seen by me since 1973 covering all genres. I still go to over 100 gigs a year.
